Technique Germaine Acogny

Germaine Acogny
Mother of African contemporary dance

Moving life to the full through the virtuosity of movement, rhythm, senses and consciousness, that is Technique Germaine Acogny. It is a unique and humane way of approaching dance.

This Modern African Dance Technique is a synthesis of Traditional Dances and techniques from West Africa (Sahel and forest area) and Contemporary Dances from the Occident, reflecting the strongest elements, energy, rhythm, telluric strength, rooting to the ground and elevation to the sky.
It is created by Germaine Acogny, 'the mother of modern African dance'. TGA is the only codified dance technique created in Africa, and is internationally recognised in the professional dance-field.
There are 17 dance-artists worldwide who received the tranmission and a diploma of TGA by Germaine Acogny herself and who are allowed to work with her work.

Practical Information

The philosophy of this technique is based on unity and community as may be found in cultural dance practices in multiple parts of the West of Africa.
The basis of this technique is the attention given to the spine. It respects any differences in body structure. The technique is about life, about the connection between being human and nature.
